I'd still recommend giving people some way to identify themselves in a post without typing their name in the post body. It would help in following the threads, but it would also be nice to include as another way to organize the posts. If you liked a post by someone, you could read other things that they'd posted. In your case (if I could filter posts by your name), it would be an easy way to follow the progress of talkinghub's development, for instance. RSS feeds would be useful. To keep people coming back if a thread they participated had new activity and make it easy to find those previous threads. I don't know how hard it would be to implement, but possibly make use of a service like tagthe.net. It takes your text and pulls out likely tags... that way you take the burden off of the user to come up with relavent tags for a post and make things easier to find. I like the idea of letting people start their own "hub". That's pretty cool. Keep up the good work! Software development is my profession, and basic functionality come up fast. My idea is now live and work here. Now the second part. How to tell the world about how good the new service is? How to ask people's feedback and make the service they'll actually love? This field is unclear for me. Are you in the same position? Determine what we can do better, and build it! This is what I'm doing here. Let's take a look at today's forums, identify their problems, and see how we can do a better job. First thing I see which can be improved is forum message categorization. Today's forums have done some effort to let users categorize messages. Which steps are? Today's forums have subforums. Or subgroups. Forum has some superuser, or administrator, which has said that this forum will have this set of subforums. So the user coming to post question sees a list of forums/subforums, or big list of groups/subgroups/subsubgroups. The user decides which category to post the question to. And finally she or he posts. Several problems can be seen here. It can be hard for administrator to define good set of subforums. And it can be hard for the user to determine which subforum to post to. As a result, the visitor may start performing some unwelcomed behavior. She or he starts posting under subforum which administrator think about as inappropriate. Or the visitor copies post into several subforums which everyone think about as inappropriate. But who said the visitor is wrong? What the forum is for? Is the forum for forum admins, or for its visitors? My goal is to develop a self-organizing forum which in ideal will have no need for admins. First step is to give power to define message categories to the visitor. The visitor is always right. I aggree with Shirkant though, you really need a way for people to identify themselves. Especially once you start getting long threads going. If people don't put their names in the posts it's going to be really hard to figure out a conversation flow. And I'd also suggest adding a "related tags" list over on the right side, so that people can browse things similar to the topic they're reading. Good effort so far. Keep up the good work!
