Basically, women back then were married young because it got them off their parent's hands, who had to pay for food and clothing for them. A wealthy husband would be guaranteed to provide for his wife, something which the woman's family might not be able to do. Also, if a woman was attending a private school, and the family were going through a tough time financially, it would be the woman who was dropped out of school, simply because they would not end up having to provide money for a family when they were older.
